On Saturday the 17th of August, my class and I went to Christchurch for a show
called Disney on Ice. We traveled over arriving in Christchurch around 3:30pm

On our trip we stopped in Arthurs Pass where we were just lucky that there was
a little bit of snow left on the side of the road we all got back in the van and we
were off to our next stop in Springfield were the big donut. In Christchurch
We went straight to our accommodation at Te Pīhopatanga where we made our

beds and had a little rest. 

About an hour later the second van arrived with all of the tuakana.
Everyone got ready as later on that evening as we were going out for dinner
at the Garden City Restaurant for an all you can eat buffet. 

Jonlee, Aleigha and I shared seven plates of food, it was pretty mean.
After everyone had finished eating we went back to Te Pīhopatanga and
changed into warm clothes. Everyone was dressed comfy so then we had to
do kapa haka for an hour with Memphis, just in case she wanted to change
anything. The tuakana (senior students) did their  bracket as well. After they
had finished teina (junior students) went back into the room and left the tuakana
singing in the main room. Later that evening, tuakana went shopping while we
stayed back with Aleigha and Kaiah. It was really fun, we played games like rap
slap, blind man's bluff and made random beats. When the tuakana returned we
all went to sleep ! 

We slept in until 8:00am,  had breakfast, got dressed for the day and went to
Palms mall. When we arrived everyone went off with their tuakana while Aleigha,
  Jonlee and I just went to Kmart to see Kaiah, Ngarama and Anika. Since they
weren't really doing much, we left to go sit at a table near McDonald's. Memphis,
Haangana and my sister were doing the poi and singing, heaps of random people
were watching them, it was kinda weird!

Everyone slowly started heading back to the van because we were going to
Margaret Mahy park. We didn't really play at the park as we went to a ball
court just around the corner to play both netball and basketball. It was real fun.
  When we had finished our games, we went back to Te Pīhopatanga and got into
four teams with the tuakana to do a little bit of a kapa haka bracket. The judges
Meladi, Matua and Whaea Kathy chose the winning team and of course it was
our team who won. Everyone started getting ready because later that night we
were going to DISNEY ON ICE !! 

We headed to the vans to travel to the Horncastle Arena. When we arrived
everyone got their tickets as we all went inside.  It was quite a wait until the show
began so we took photos and got some hot chips before heading in to get our VIP
seats. The show finally started with two hosts (a boy and a girl) they were
annoying especially the girl as she wouldn't be quiet.  Thankfully they finally
stopped talking as Mickey and Minnie came out and heaps of people started ice
skating around. Moana was the best part of the whole show because it was in Te
Reo Māori and they didn't seem to talk as much as the other characters.  

At the end we went to Hell's Pizza for dinner my table had three whole pizzas
to share for dinner that was actually heaps because we only had four people at
our table later we started heading back to Te Pīhopatanga and played games
outside with Aleigha. Ngarama, Jonlee and I started getting bored so we went
back inside and played a quiet game of cards well we tried to be quiet. The lights
got turned off so we finished our game of cards and went to bed. 

The next morning we woke up at 7.30 am to  get ready, have breakfast, pack
away our beds, tidy up, have karakia and soon head to Riccarton Mall.

When we got there Anika, Kaiah and I went to get something to eat. 
Later on, we Anika went to Kmart and looked around.

Overall I think my trip was wonderful and I will definitely look forward to our
next trip.

I would like to thank our kaiako, the tuakana and teina who made this trip
possible.

Te Hui Ahurei

Te Hui Ahurei o Te Tai o Poutini 2019...

On Monday, the 23 of September 2019, the Kapa Haka roopū of Westlan
High School attended the annual Te Hui Ahurei o Te Tai o Poutini Kapa Haka
festival held at the Greymouth Regent Theatre. Ngarama and I stayed at my
sister’s place the night before the event. We woke up at 6:00am on Monday
morning to get ready for the day ahead, excitement was rushing through
our bodies throughout the morning. After everyone was ready we got in
the car and drove with my older sister to the Greymouth Regent Theatre. 

We arrived at the theatre and went up on the stage to begin the
pōwhiri, welcoming the manuhiri into the venue. Following the pōwhiri
Greymain Primary School Kapa Haka Group kicked the day off with an
amazing performance. As the other groups began to perform their brackets
Ngarama and I went and bought waffles, lollies and ice cream to eat as we
waited for the Hokitika Primary School to perform. Once they began
performing I felt a great sense of pride watching my cousins as well as my
little sister performing for the Hokitika Primary School Kapa Haka roopū.
Overall, I really enjoyed watching the primary schools perform. 

As the second high school roopū began to perform that
afternoon, Westland High School Kapa Haka group walked to backstage area
to prepare for the performance ahead. I felt a little nervous just before we
walked onto the stage. However, the nerves left my body as soon as we
walked on the stage. Through the performance it felt like we were just singing
in class like usual, overall I thought our performance was solid. When we

walked off the stage it felt as if mountains were lifted off of my shoulders.

We all felt pleased with our performance and the joy and excitement by our

whānau and the audience.

After a long day of watching kapa haka performances, it was time to
get McDonald's and then return home to the metropolis of the
West Coast Hokitika.
